Food contamination

Due to a Listeria outbreak and the resulting deaths of two consumers, a selection of dairy products sold by Modesto, California-based company Rizo López Foods has been recalled.  The items were sold in retail stores, such as Walmart, Costco, and Trader Joe’s.  The roughly 60 items removed from store shelves range from various salad dressings, salad kits, taco kits, layered dips, queso fresco, and cotija cheese.  As early as June 2014, at least 26 people have reported illnesses tied to the consumption of the recalled products.  Since December 2023, the investigation was reopened.

Cheese Co. Singled Out

What’s your favorite cheese?

Emphasized as a key Food That Built America, American cheese has remained a staple in households across the nation since James Kraft introduced it at the turn of the 20th century.  This episode of the History Channel’s popular food origin show concludes with food expert, Adam Richman reminiscently peeling apart the wrapper to a Kraft American cheese single, folding it, and taking a bite on camera.  Two and a half years after this episode aired, Kraft has issued a recall for this exact product.

Parents and caregivers of little babies are tasked with choosing the precise food and developmental tools necessary to garner the greatest opportunity or likelihood for growth, safety, and happiness. While the brand of pureed sweet potatoes and the manufacturer reliability of baby swings are important considerations, it may be assumed that the clothing available for mass-market purchase is safe and comfortable for children. However, a November 17 recall of a specific yellow fleece footed pajama, manufactured by Carter’s, is proof that the quality of clothing chosen for little babies is as equally critical.

Swing in the Legal Direction

Consumers of MamaRoo or RockaRoo baby swings may be entitled to compensation, as a class action has been filed following an August recall. After receiving reports of one 10-month-old infant passing away from asphyxiation and another 10-month-old suffering from bruising around the neck, 4moms, the manufacturing company, pushed for the recall. According to the complaint, the hazards presented do not necessarily impact the infants that may be strapped into the swings, but do create an unsafe environment for crawling infants or toddlers. The straps are designed to hang below the seat, where they are within reach of a child that is on the ground.

The efficiency and convenience of a relatively new small appliance may not outweigh the potential hazards it poses. First invented in 2010, air fryers have hit the market as a popular item for weekly meal preparations in kitchens across the US and Canada. In addition, consumers have enjoyed the healthier benefits to air frying their food over cooking in oil. Allegedly, consumers may intake fewer calories and fat. The potential downside to cooking with an air fryer is the possibility for the appliance to overheat and cause burn and fire risks.
