Rideshare with Care

The family of a slain 21-year-old has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the ridesharing company, Uber. In the claim, the family accuses the Uber driver of negligently leaving the area where their son exited the vehicle. On the early morning of May 21, 2023, 21-year-old Cory Hunter was one of five passengers in the car. He had fallen asleep during the trip, however, around 2:30 am he was asked to leave the vehicle to allow another passenger to vomit outside. Unfortunately, Hunter never hopped back into the car.

Seas the Opportunity

A new anniversary may be tagged to the site where 111 years ago, the Titanic sank to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean almost 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. On Father’s Day this year, a submersible named the Titan, manned by the company OceanGate, had deployed to the depths of the sea in hopes that its passengers would view the wreckage of the Titanic. Four days after the Titan began its expedition, sections of the vessel were located on the ocean floor. Due to what the US Coast Guard has identified as a catastrophic implosion of the pressure chamber, the passengers perished.

Dark Patterned Future

Due to the implementation of questionable business practices, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken legal action against Amazon. Allegedly, to convince customers to enroll in Prime subscriptions, the company has engaged in trickery. The effort has apparently been ongoing for years and has led to the positive outcome of increased sales for the company. In the lawsuit filed by the FTC, the agency claims that Amazon not only uses deceptive techniques for attracting customers to the Prime subscription, but also makes it difficult for existing customers to cancel their subscriptions. Some are not even aware that the subscriptions are recurring and are renewed without their consent.

Standing at 527 North Grand Boulevard in the Grand Center neighborhood of St. Louis, the Fox Theatre has maintained its status and prestige as a city landmark, earning the moniker, the “Fabulous Fox.” Despite its well renowned history, preservation, and extended use, in 2021, the Fox Theatre became the subject of a land dispute lawsuit involving two parties who claimed ownership of the property. Given the interesting arrangement of existing ownership percentages, it is arguably natural or at least expected that a legal disagreement would develop. Pet owners may pause (or paws) to consider the brand of flea-and-tick medications that they administer to their dogs or cats. In a recent consumer protection-related lawsuit, exclusivity contracts are allegedly to blame for the lack of variety in widespread drug products available to pet owners. According to the claim, if given the fair opportunity to purchase generic options, consumers of Advantage II and K9 Advantix II topical flea-and-tick treatments could have saved a lot of money.
