There is an old philosophical argument that goes as follows: If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound? A recent lawsuit in Michigan is finally providing an answer: Yes. Residents of Bloomfield Hills, MI have taken up a class-action against tree removal by the power company DTE Energy. Reports say they hired a tree-trimming company to take trees down in a short period of time without giving notice to the community. The power company was worried about the trees interfering with cables they had been running in the area, and had petitioned to remove them. Clearly upset by the secretive manner in which DTE went about this deforestation, the people living in Bloomfield Hills are now seeking $54 million in restitution. Read more

Muslims Have Beef with McDonald’s Settlement
Ever want to know what’s really in a Big Mac? In a recent settlement, McDonald’s was ordered to pay about $700,000 to parties effected by the fast food restaurant for selling non-halal chicken that was advertised as halal. Halal, in the Islamic religion, is food that has been deemed edible. Originally, the settlement was to be divided between a few organizations based around Dearborn Heights, MI. However, other Muslims in the area are now calling into question the right of their own compensation. The two McDonald’s in Michigan are reportedly the only fast food restaurants in the state where halal food is served. Read more
Sex and the “Motor City”
The “Motor City” has seen yet again another scandal in its Police Department. Looks like they will be moving on to its 5th Police Chief in the past 4 years. Ralph Godbee has resigned from his position as Detroit Police Chief after news of an affair with a subordinate. Angelica Robinson, an internal affairs officer, and Godbee had been in a relationship for a year before she tried ending it with the former Police Chief. He apparently was upset by the breakup and went to a conference in California with another woman. Oh yeah, he’s also married. Ms. Robinson must have been angry because she posted a picture of herself on Twitter with her weapon in her mouth threatening to end her life. Authorities tracked her cell phone and have had surveillance on her since. Mayor Dave Bing got wind of the incident and suspended Godbee for 30 days. He decided to overrule the Board of Police Commissioners and discipline Godbee on his own, since he appointed him to Police Chief just two years ago.
University of Michigan Newspaper Receives Minor Penalty For Lawsuit
The Michigan Daily and The Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (O.H.L.) have settled out of court for a libel lawsuit that began earlier this summer. A July 2nd article reported from an anonymous source that Jacob Trouba, who committed to play at Michigan, was offered $200,000 from the Rangers to forgo his college career and instead play for the Major Junior team. Such an offer, if true, would have violated the O.H.L.’s rules regarding impermissible benefits.
