A 2009 gender discrimination lawsuit filed by the Quinnipiac University Women’s Volleyball coach against the school has recently been settled. The settlement is of particular interest in athletic departments across the nation as it offers a solution to a frequently-had debate in the sports world: Is Cheerleading a sport? In an attempt to eliminate Quinnipiac’s volleyball program altogether, the school had intimated that sufficient resources had instead been allotted to competitive cheer and that they were therefore compliant under the guidelines of Title IX. More than just a 15-yard penalty

Unsportsmanlike conduct could be a bit of an understatement. After being indicted for the alleged murder of a man in Massachusetts, Aaron Hernandez, former Tight End for the New England Patriots, is also being sued. Alexander Buckley claims that when Hernandez was in college in Florida, he was “shot and left for dead” by the former NFL star. Summoned to the stand during the grand jury investigation into Hernandez, Buckley was asked about the incident that left him with a missing eye. A Superior Court judge in Falls River, MA motioned to see what more information Buckley had against Hernandez. Buckley is seeking $100,000 in damages. Read more

On track for a lawsuit

This lawsuit gives a new meaning to the phrase “Speed kills”. A father in New Jersey has sued his son’s school for kicking him off of the track team. Mawusimensah Mears, who ran track for Sterling Regional High School in Camden County, had reportedly been skipping out on practice after his coaches left him on the bench. The boy’s father, Ervin Mears Jr, goes as far as to claim that his was being ridiculed by his teammates for being faster than them. The younger Mears had also missed practice due to an injury and a death in the family. The father is seeking damages up to $40 million against the school, track coach, and principal, among other parties. Read more

Many people often forget about the danger associated with the sport. When a player straps on a helmet, there is a high probability that aninjury can occur sometime throughout their career. The National Football League has recently been under a lot of scrutiny for head injuries and concussions that have occurred on the field.

Victim 1 of Sandusky Case Sues Penn State Over Concealing the Abuse

Jerry Sandusky, the former assistant football coach of the Penn State football team was convicted in June of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15 year period. One of the victims involved in the Jerry Sandusky case, identified by the Grand Jury as “Victim 1” recently sued Penn State on Friday, August 31st. He claimed that the school had helped to conceal the abuse of the children and was more interested in “protecting the reputation and commercial viability of the football program” than putting a stop to a child predator. Victim 1 also accused notable Penn State administrators, including Joe Paterno, with the knowledge that Jerry Sandusky was a “dangerous, sociopathic sexual predator who had previously raped, sodomized, and/or otherwise seriously harmed young boys on the Penn State campus.”
