Handcuff Lawsuit Secures a Settlement

Cuffs are costly

Following an October 2015 incident concerning a seven-year-old child being placed in handcuffs at school, the parties involved have recently agreed to settle for $40,000. Half will be paid by the city of Flint, Michigan, and the other will be paid by the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce.  The mother of the young boy, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, filed the lawsuit in 2018.  The police were called after the child kicked an object and ran on bleachers while participating in an after-school activity.  In order to calm the child, a resource officer handcuffed his hands behind his back for almost an hour.  The apparent reason for the prolonged detainment was that the officer was not able to locate a key to unlock the handcuffs. About fifty former wrestlers from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) have accused the organization of failing to provide adequate protection and safety to its wrestlers.  While they make the job look easy, wrestlers do experience complications and face injuries related to their sport.  One of the more frequent injuries associated with professional wrestling is the concussion. Although defined as a soft tissue injury, repeated concussions may leave lasting impacts on an individual’s brain and system function.  Throughout the course of a wrestler’s career, he or she may suffer from more than one concussion.  For this reason, the fifty former wrestlers filed a lawsuit against WWE. Grab Your Margaritas, the Lawsuit is Over

Will it help the economy?

The parties involved in a lawsuit, which stalled the building of a Margaritaville resort in Fort Myers Beach, FL, have come to an agreement.  The plaintiffs in the case alleged that the construction and plan for the resort was arguably unconstitutional and would lead to a negative impact due to its size and density.  This lawsuit, however, was not the sole complaint about the project, as other lawsuits in the past have been filed in an attempt to stop the development.  Naturally, the litigation costs required of the lawsuits have hindered the financing of the project itself.  Despite any downfalls or roadblocks that the lawsuits have caused, the plan to create the resort is now underway. Facebook Settles for a Brighter Future

Illinois Facebook users are finding some relief in the most recent legal settlement against the social media company.  According to Illinois law, companies may not collect facial recognition information and data without prior consent of the detected individual.  One of Facebook’s features tags photos through the use of software that distinguishes facial similarities.  The lawsuit reached class action status and was originally filed in 2015.  Claimants argued that Facebook did not obtain prior authorization of Illinois residents who use Facebook.  Instead the social media company implemented the feature as a default for users. NY Times Facing Rough Times

Subscription scrutiny

A California resident is taking legal action against a company that is based on the other side of the United States.  In the resident’s claim, she states instances of deceptive business practices, committed by the New York Times.  The lawsuit is on the level of a class action, as more people than just the California resident are affected.  The resident, Maribel Moses, is concerned about two policies of the New York Times, one that involves automatic subscription renewals and the other that involves subscription cancellations.
