Although the right to freedom of speech is a protected principle, a court of law may determine whether or not the spoken opinions of one party have infringed upon the rights of an impacted individual. Cardi B, for example, fought back after a celebrity gossip blogger, Tasha K, posted videos that implied that the rapper was employed as a prostitute and used heavy street drugs. While this was the opinion of the blogger, who posted the videos to her YouTube account, there are potential limitations between exercising the First Amendment and exhibiting defamatory behavior. Housewife Drops Suit Behind Camera
Despite her recent demotion within The Real Housewives of OC franchise, Vicki Gunvalson continues to outshine her cohorts as the original Bravo Housewife. Never one to back down from a fight, Gunvalson filed a lawsuit against former castmate, Kelly Dodd, accusing her of speaking defamatory allegations that could potentially harm her business. Throughout the pair’s prolonged feud, Dodd supposedly called Gunvalson a fraud and a con who “prey[s] on older people.” Gunvalson insists Dodd’s statements are untrue and malicious. Continue reading
A Bronx Tale: MLB Fan Falls Asleep, Sues
As the World Cup in Brazil continues to captivate millions across the globe, it seems that baseball (not soccer) is the sport putting fans to sleep. Just ask Andrew Rector, a baseball fan who recently fell asleep during a nationally televised New York vs Boston game. ESPN cameras caught Rector dozing off, at which time announcers John Kruk and Dan Shulman began to poke fun at his expense. Embarrassed and humiliated, the fan consulted a lawyer and filed a lawsuit to the tune of $10 million. Everyone knows the saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” but in this day age words and statements are not to be taken lightly and can cause a lot of damage. While social media gives celebrities the ability to speak their minds to their fans, there have been plenty of public figures that have eaten their written words when they have not been cautious about while posting about others. In a recent incident, hip-hop superstar Jayceon Taylor, better known as The Game, has recently came out with a slanderous statement about his previous babysitter, Karen Monroe, on Instagram and Twitter.
