A Reel Challenge

Although a crew of anglers that reeled in a 600-pound blue marlin in mid-June has been officially disqualified from winning first place, the Sensation crew has since hired legal counsel to challenge that decision. Given the disqualification, the crew not only loses bragging rights, but also loses the opportunity to accept the $3 million prize. Before a final decision was made, a careful deliberation was held amongst the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament Rules Committee, Board of Directors, biologists from both NC State CMAST and NC Marine Fisheries, and an official from the International Game Fish Association.

Wrongful death lawsuit

Last summer, news outlets were consumed with the disappearance of Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old woman who mysteriously ceased communication with her family while traveling cross-country with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie. The couple departed from New York in July; and Brian traveled home to his parents’ house in Florida on September 1. Gabby was reported missing on September 11, and about a week later, her body was found in Teton County, Wyoming. Now, more than half a year has passed, and Gabby’s parents have taken measures to seek compensation for their daughter’s strangulation and subsequent death. Continue reading →

Defamation Heard in Court

Suing exes

Following a 2018 opinion piece, which was published as an op-ed in the Washington Post, Johnny Depp has filed a defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Within the past week, Depp has taken the stand in a Fairfax County, Virginia court to recount his past relationship with Heard and to defend his character. His ex-wife, to whom he was married from 2015 to 2016, has reportedly smeared Depp’s name, alleging domestic abuse during the course of their relatively short marriage. In response to this supposed defamation, Depp is asking for $50 million. Continue reading →

The main purpose of antitrust laws in the United States is to encourage competition among businesses and help eliminate monopolies. The intent is to allow consumers the opportunity to decide which business or distributer best meets their needs. Otherwise, consumers may be left with limited options and may become victim to destructive business practices. Recently, the announcement of the $2.7 billion settlement between claimants and Blue Cross Blue Shield relates to antitrust laws and violations of fair competition. Policyholders who may be eligible to receive a piece of this class action lawsuit include those who were covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield plans from February 2008 to October 2020. Continue reading →
