With bullying awareness on the rise in our nation, many students and families are trying to take a stand. A young student at South Fayette High School finally had enough when he decided to record bullying incidents directed at him during class. Using an iPad, the boy made an audio recording of the attacks to use as evidence in his case. The 15-year old boy alleged that he had been harassed daily for several months before finally making the iPad recording. Shea Love, the boy’s mother, told reporters that “they were calling him some really bad names, talking about pulling his pants down” (WPXI, 2014). Despite these allegations, the young boy who made the recordings was eventually charged with disorderly conduct, had to pay fines, and was forced to delete the recording. In response to these charges from South Fayette District Judge Maureen McGraw-Desmet, the family hired an attorney and they are filing a civil suit.
Amanda Todd, a 15 year old from British Columbia, has taken her life due to years of torment from her peers and community. The young girl had made the mistake of flashing her breasts to a gentleman online during a slumber party. This man found her on Facebook and sent the pictures out to all her friends and classmates. She was chastised and bullied for her adolescent decision for years, even having to move more than once to escape the agony. Todd made a Youtube video reaching out for help, stating that she had once tried to take her life and that she needed someone to lend a hand. The authorities knew about the pictures and the school system knew of her suicidal threats, but then where were they when she actually decided to end it? The real important question is why is this disturbing gentleman, who took Todd’s intimate pictures viral, not locked up? I guess a number of people had the same question because the group Anonymous, an unlikely hero in certain aspects, outed the pervert’s name, address, and age.
On October 17th, 2011 a bully waited anxiously inside the doors of a classroom of the Union-Scioto High School in Ohio for Zack Huston, a fifteen year-old homosexual freshman at the school, to walk in. Upon Zack’s arrival, he was immediately met with fists. The bully assaulted Zach for no reason except that Zach was gay. He knocked him to the ground, and continually punched him. The video is difficult to watch.
