Pregnant Chicago Inmates No Longer Shackled During Childbirth

The Cook County Jail in Chicago ignored state law and chose to shackle female prisoners during childbirth, severely limiting movement, causing discomfort and, potentially, harm. Yesterday, a settlement won $4.1 million for women involved in the lawsuit, along with changes to the sheriff's departments procedures.

Right to Wear a T-Shirt Confirmed for High School Student

An Ohio teenager won the right to wear a "Jesus is not a homophobe" t-shirt at his high school. First forced to reverse the t-shirt during a gay rights awareness day at school, he was later threatened with suspension should he wear the shirt again. Today, the young man won in settlement both $20,000 and the right to wear the shirt.
