{"id":8063,"date":"2020-02-19T12:37:14","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T17:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/?p=8063"},"modified":"2020-04-20T09:18:56","modified_gmt":"2020-04-20T13:18:56","slug":"patients-may-be-pumped-for-a-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/index.php\/patients-may-be-pumped-for-a-lawsuit\/","title":{"rendered":"Patients May be Pumped for a Lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_8177\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8177\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/insulin-pump.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8177\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/insulin-pump-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/insulin-pump-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/insulin-pump-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/insulin-pump-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/insulin-pump-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Insulin issue<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Individuals with Type 1 diabetes, beware.\u00a0 A recall was just announced by the Food and Drug Administration concerning the Medtronic MiniMed 600 series insulin pumps.\u00a0 Owners of this type of pump are at risk of receiving either more or less than the required insulin dosage.\u00a0 The reason?\u00a0The pumps are being used with missing or broken retainer rings, which are necessary units that lock the cartridges into place in the reservoir compartment.\u00a0 If not locked into place, an incorrect level of insulin will be delivered.\u00a0 Type 1 diabetes patients rely on their insulin pumps to survive.\u00a0 If the pumps are not of sound construction, their lives may be in danger. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The FDA issued the Class I recall of 322,005 insulin pumps after learning of one Medtronic MiniMed 600 series-related death, as well as 2,175 injuries suffered by patients.\u00a0 The recall class issued is of the most extreme type and of the utmost importance.\u00a0 Medtronic advised that the retainer ring can become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/02\/12\/health\/medtronic-recall-minimed-insulin-pump-fda\/index.html\">damaged<\/a> upon impact on a hard surface or floor.\u00a0 Injuries include hypoglycemia, which is indicated by feelings of dizziness, confusion, and weakness; and hyperglycemia, which can cause loss of consciousness, seizures, or possible death.<\/p>\n<p>The recalled devices include MiniMed Series Insulin Pumps, Model 630G (MMT \u2013 1715) and Model 670G (MMT \u2013 1780).\u00a0 In addition to the FDA\u2019s recall of these devices, Medtronic reached out to consumers, and health care providers are helping their patients who have used the recalled pumps.\u00a0 Medtronic insists that safety is the company\u2019s focus and it will be working endlessly to fix the issues in the malfunctioned products.\u00a0 Patients are instructed to contact Medtronic for a new pump if there is a determined locking issue on their existing pumps.\u00a0 The other option is for patients to use manual insulin injections, if this is seen as the best solution after consulting with their doctor.
