{"id":7656,"date":"2018-07-19T09:30:05","date_gmt":"2018-07-19T13:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/?p=7656"},"modified":"2020-06-12T09:59:58","modified_gmt":"2020-06-12T13:59:58","slug":"from-pirate-to-plaintiff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/index.php\/from-pirate-to-plaintiff\/","title":{"rendered":"From Pirate to Plaintiff"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_8336\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8336\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/From-pirate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8336\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/From-pirate-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/From-pirate-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/From-pirate-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/From-pirate-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lawyer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/From-pirate-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8336\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Johnny can&#8217;t depend on anyone<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Johnny Depp has agreed to settle a lawsuit, in which he accused his former business managers of negligence and dabbling in fraudulent activities with his money. \u00a0The amount of money Depp was looking to recover was $25 million. \u00a0Depp played the role of victim, claiming the firm did not uphold their fiduciary duties to him. \u00a0He blamed Joel and Robert Mandel of the Management Company, who managed Depp\u2019s affairs for 17 years, for issuing loans to outside entities without Depp\u2019s knowledge, and investing the actor\u2019s money in opportunities for which the managers could also claim stake. \u00a0Depp also accused the Management Group of failing to file his taxes in a timely manner. \u00a0Despite these accusations, Joel and Robert Mandel filed counterclaims in the lawsuit.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The business managers believe the responsibility of Depp\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/movies\/news\/johnny-depp-settles-blockbuster-lawsuit-against-business-managers\/ar-AAAaAV6?ocid=spartanntp\">debt<\/a> remains his own issue, and even describe Depp\u2019s allegations against the company as \u201cfabricated.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0In the counterclaim, the Management Company was looking to collect $560,000 from Depp, which totaled all unpaid fees for services rendered. \u00a0The managers revealed Depp\u2019s excessive spending habits, including a wine budget of $30,000 a month; and focused on the company\u2019s attempts to advise Depp of his dangerous spending pattern and the eventual outcome. \u00a0Depp argued the company only made him aware of his depleting funds in March of 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants stressed that despite their efforts of presenting financial concern to Depp, the actor continued his lavish <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/hollywood\/la-fi-ct-depp-investigation20170815-story.html#\">lifestyle<\/a>.\u00a0 The Management Company accused Depp of spending money he really did not have, about $2 million a month.\u00a0 According to the company, Depp maintains 14 houses, spends $200,000 a month on a private jet, and $150,000 a month for security for himself and family.\u00a0 With an August 15 court date in sight, the parties attempted to come to an agreement in mediation.
