For years, social media has been scrutinized and criticized as one of the driving forces behind youth bullying, self-esteem issues, and poor mental health. Now, a federal lawsuit and subsequent state lawsuits have targeted Meta, the corporate owner of Facebook and Instagram, for employing dangerous tactics and features for drawing teenagers and children into its social media apps. The lawsuits suggest that the specific methods of encouraging continued use have contributed to a deterioration of mental health in its users.

A private label for Dick’s Sporting Goods is wrapped up in a legal dispute with a company that specializes in sports apparel, team uniforms, and jerseys. Launched within the past decade, Wooter advertises a unique infinity symbol that appears to resemble two semi-open links in a chain. About a year following Wooter’s development, the brand Calia was introduced with Carrie Underwood as the face of the women’s activewear line. Although Underwood left the brand two years ago, Calia continues to drive impressive sales for Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Headquartered in Singapore, the online fashion retailer Shein has been under legal scrutiny for its apparent knockoff items that look exactly like the creative works produced by known fashion designers. Three US designers have filed a lawsuit, accusing the company of committing copyright infringement at such a remarkably destructive rate that it embodies racketeering. Although the amount of compensatory damages sought has not formally been disclosed to the public, the designers are asking for an injunction to cease the infringement and prevent the business activity from continuing. They claim that Shein is in violation of the RICO Act.

The family of a slain 21-year-old has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the ridesharing company, Uber. In the claim, the family accuses the Uber driver of negligently leaving the area where their son exited the vehicle. On the early morning of May 21, 2023, 21-year-old Cory Hunter was one of five passengers in the car. He had fallen asleep during the trip, however, around 2:30 am he was asked to leave the vehicle to allow another passenger to vomit outside. Unfortunately, Hunter never hopped back into the car.

A new anniversary may be tagged to the site where 111 years ago, the Titanic sank to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean almost 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. On Father’s Day this year, a submersible named the Titan, manned by the company OceanGate, had deployed to the depths of the sea in hopes that its passengers would view the wreckage of the Titanic. Four days after the Titan began its expedition, sections of the vessel were located on the ocean floor. Due to what the US Coast Guard has identified as a catastrophic implosion of the pressure chamber, the passengers perished.
