Speeding Away from Liability

Leaving the scene

Following the shocking death of Nicki Minaj’s father, Robert Maraj, the man allegedly responsible for his demise has been charged and civilly sued for wrongful death. Although the famous singer has reportedly refrained from issuing a public statement in regards to the circumstances of her father’s death, Nicki Minaj’s mother, Carol Maraj, expresses relief in knowing that the man accused of killing her husband has been identified. On February 12 of this year, Robert Maraj was struck by a vehicle while walking in Mineola on Long Island and died in the hospital the following day.

The man behind the wheel did not stop to assist Maraj and sped away from the scene. He did not report the accident. On February 17, Charles Polevich was arrested and charged for leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with evidence. In addition to his order to not leave the state of New York, Polevich was released from jail on bail. He has pleaded not guilty. Polevich’s attorney has commented on the apparent unreasonable amount of compensation Carol Maraj is seeking in the civil suit and challenges the rather high number of $150 million.

The lawsuit intends to hold Polevich liable for recklessness, carelessness, and negligence in hitting Robert Maraj, who was 64 years old, and subsequently left the injured man at the scene. Polevich, who is 70 years old, has expressed his deepest sympathy to the Maraj family but maintains his innocence in the accusations against him. According to his legal representation, the degree of negligence allegedly committed by Polevich has not been proven. Despite his defense, Polevich may be left to handle the consequences of his actions criminally and civilly. Carol Maraj has issued a statement on behalf of her family, expressing content that not only has a suspect been named but also formally charged for actions that impacted their family.
