To effectively illustrate the practical application of an educational theory or concept, teachers may often incorporate tangible or realistic examples.  On May 2, 2022, a former science teacher at Volcano Vista High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico brought two swords into the classroom to demonstrate a lesson on metal and melding.  Rather than simply showing the swords to the class, the teacher instructed the students to duel with one another.  The two weapons were katana- and rapier-style swords and did not resemble props.  The level of probable danger might not have been anticipated, as one student was injured.

House fix gone wrong

In response to a lawsuit filed in December 2023, actor Sofia Vergara has issued a counterclaim.  The legal dispute focuses on the renovations to Vergara’s Los Angeles home, which she purchased in 2020, while still married to her now ex-husband Joe Manganiello.  According to the initial claim, Vergara’s contractor, Reside Custom Homes (RCH), accuses the Modern Family alum of promissory fraud, breach of contract, and intentional interference with contractual relations.  Among the allegations, RCH claims that Vergara failed to pay two bills, one for $896,196.15 and the other for $657,245.23, associated with work already completed on the home.

Food contamination

Due to a Listeria outbreak and the resulting deaths of two consumers, a selection of dairy products sold by Modesto, California-based company Rizo López Foods has been recalled.  The items were sold in retail stores, such as Walmart, Costco, and Trader Joe’s.  The roughly 60 items removed from store shelves range from various salad dressings, salad kits, taco kits, layered dips, queso fresco, and cotija cheese.  As early as June 2014, at least 26 people have reported illnesses tied to the consumption of the recalled products.  Since December 2023, the investigation was reopened.

Televised struggles

Less than two years following the June 2022 final airing of The Wendy Williams Show, news broke of the former talk show host’s frontotemporal dementia and aphasia diagnosis.  The 59-year-old entered an agreement with Lifetime to produce a documentary, which would follow Williams’ life in transition from television to a new podcast.  During the year and a half that cameras followed her and conducted interviews with her family members, however, the focus of the documentary shifted to that of her health and the apparent growing concern about the level of adequate care that she was receiving.
